Title: Solar thermal seawater desalination to produce potable water in developing countries

This thesis is concentrated on solar sea and brackish water desalination in order to produce potable water for developing countries. It introduces two countries as major destinations. Target was to find the best available technology. A review on conventional desalination processes is given. A research in present reports and documents for the state of the art and development of solar powered desalination is presented in the next step. Methods, pro’s and con’s of solar stills, multi effect humidification-dehumidification, multi effect distillation, membrane distillation and rapid spray evaporators are discussed in detail. Based on these results major criteria are developed. Four desalination plants for specific use are recommended. Further aspects of solar desalination concentrating on decentralised action in developing countries are listed and discussed.

The Financial Times of London begins a story: “Water, like energy in the late 1970s, probably become the most critical natural resource issue facing most parts of the world by the start of this century."
