Alternative service in Kenya

Instead of serving my nation with a gun I prefered a more peacefull method.
For approximately a hundred Austrians a year it is possible to fullfill their alternative service abroad.

From July 2004 to October 2005 I worked for 14 months with the KWAHO in Kenya.

KWAHO - Kenya Water for Health Organisation

KWAHO (www.kwaho.org) is the organisation I worked with.

Initiated in 1976 as a UNICEF Water for Health Project as a result of the Women's Conference (Mexico 1975) for the long distances rural women must often walk to collect drinking water. 1983 KWAHO was registered as an indigenous NGO

Prime objective: assisting Kenyan communities to access water within manageable distances to allow women to attend properly to the other needs of their family and community from the time gained.

Targets of the KWAHO are to offer partnership to disadvantaged communities to improve their social and economic standards by facilitating the provision of

  • clean water "maji safi"
  • hygienic sanitation
  • management of sustainable environment
  • promotion of income generating initiatives

My MOTIVATION

my motivation was ...
... to experience development cooperation reality
... to realise a longlasting dream - getting to know a bit of Africa
... to try and leave this world a little better than I found it
